Estevan, Saskatchewan

Estevan in Saskatchewan is a settlement which was set up to service the development of the Canadian Pacific railway. It lies very close to the border with the United States, specifically North Dakota, on what was flat and rather marshy prairie; the landscape is now disfigured with vast opencast mines, which form the main industry. The population is now 10,000, but it was a very small place in my grandfather's day.
